Tranquil Tangier.

Retreat. Rejuvenate. Restore.

Dar Sinclair & Lalla Yenou, Tangier, Morocco

Retreat to Tangier

Last year I had the great luck to spend the best three months ever in Tangier, a dynamic port city on Morocco's Atlantic coast where Africa meets Europe.

After a summer spent far too often at the kitchen sink or blowing on a BBQ, I was really in need of a rest and a reset. Up in the royal hills of Tangier, looking out over this mythical salt box city, I was restored to sanity in the beautiful historic villa, Lalla Yenou.

With the exceptional care and food provided by Amina, a super special soul in charge of all things delicious at this heavenly spot and accompanied by some determined research, my husband and I discovered a world of talented and welcoming local body work practitioners.

Yoga, pilates, osteopathy, breathwork, Qi Gong and a magical masseuse were our daily delights. Thrilled to have been so clever and lucky, we got stuck into this really restorative work, some familiar and some new, but all of it gave us a profound sense of renewal.

A white building with balconies and open green shutters is viewed from a garden with various plants, including purple flowers, palm trees, and other greenery, under a clear blue sky.

And the idea of Retreat Tangiers was born.

I invite you to join me for a week, in the beautiful adjacent villas of Dar Sinclair and Lalla Yenou, where you will benefit from the extraordinary reparative powers of these wonderful local specialists.

A week to restore your entire being and to discover the soul of the true Tangiers.

Dream Team: Our Practioners

Florence
Richer

Osteopath

Graduating in Osteopathy in 2005, Florence takes a deep yet gentle approach to relieving chronic pain by addressing tissue stress in both the visceral organs and the musculoskeletal system.

If, after a thorough medical examination, you are told that nothing is wrong — yet you continue to suffer from persistent pain dismissed as “all in your head” — Florence offers a different approach. She works with conditions such as neuralgia, anxiety, psychosomatic pain, sleep disorders, and recurrent infections.

Personal note:

I went with a case of tennis elbow that had plagued me for nearly a year. Florence fixed it in one session. Maybe I was lucky but it felt like a miracle!

The garden includes a large lawn at the back of the house, with paths that wind down through a beautiful array of flowers and plants to the beautiful swimming pool area. There are a few ponds where you can spot frogs and a small ‘fort’ for a shaded break. There is a large BBQ terrace with a large table half way between the house and the pool where we will enjoy a luscious shady lunch.

All the main bedrooms are located at the front of the house offer stunning views over the city and the Bay of Tangier with J’bel Moussa in the distance. J’bel Tar (Gibraltar) and J’bel Moussa were the two pillars of Hercules.

A storied history

The family history of Dar Sinclair, dates back exactly a century, to the architect Jack Sinclair, who built it as a bungalow in 1926. It was passed down through generations, and has been extensively renovated and expanded. It is now one of the most special villas in Tangier, inherited and now owned by the British Wheeler sisters ( one of whom you might know from the catwalk!). Their mother, photographer Tessa Codrington, captured the demi-monde of western bohemians, outlaws and aesthetes, welcomed throughout the 20th century by this famously tolerant yet conservative city. For Swinging London-era boomers, this was the coolest place in the world. Attracting intellectuals, writers, rock stars, artists and heiresses, with an allure all of its own, Tangier has always been a unique city in Morocco.
